Sleepy Hollow

Camera Shop

____

Back in the 1960s, there

were a good number

of camera shops in the

villages; but over the

years, the local camera

store has mostly faded

away, along with that

relative “newbie,” the

video store. In 1970,

these two young men

were learning the photo

shop trade at the right

hand of the Tarrytown

camera-master, Jim Con-

ley (above–I guess, we

can see–one of them

had to settle for his

left hand). Today, this

storefront hosts “Rose

Nail Salon.” During

in-between times, a

shop named simply

“Good Old Days”–

among others–held

sway there.

_____

Perhaps Mr. Conley

played a practical joke

on the village fathers of

North Tarrytown (now

Sleepy Hollow) by call-

ing his Tarrytown store

the “Sleepy Hollow

Camera Shop.” Back in

the ’60s & ’70s, when

both villages were still

considered to be part

and parcel of the Tarry-

towns, few residents

noticed such anomalies.

Just look at the “Headless

Horseman Book Shoppe,”

up one block (and across the

street–on the north side).

_____

I can remember “talking shop”

once with the son of the owner of

a competing camera shop. He said

about 90 per cent of their

customers were either dropping

off film–or picking up prints.

When film was incoming, he

had three specific questions

to ask; these were along the

lines of, “Glossy finish, or

matte?” That was about the

extent of it, he said. Or if

you had bought one of their

newfangled Polaroid cameras,

that whole processing thing–

would go--out the window!
